This Hoop Pine floor restoration involved plenty of floorboard replacement.
Not only was it riddled with borer damage, but it also had never been sanded before. At almost 100 years old, the timber was, of course showing its age. The owners were clear about their vision.
Even though there was extensive borer damage, they wanted all affected boards removed. This was their instructions, regardless of cost. Polishing old timber floors is our specialty, so we were up for the challenge!
Floorboards Repaired and Stained
At the same time, the new Hoop Pine boards would also need stain to match the existing floor. This is because the old floorboards have darkened with age.
As seen in the image below, all damaged boards are marked for removal. To begin with, I would like to point out an important factor. Before any floor restoration work or floor repairs proceeds, I always walk through with the owner. This is so both parties agree on exactly what will be replaced. Not only that, but also all extra costs are first signed off by the owner.
To clarify, before this floor restoration took place, the extent of borer damage was not clear. This is because it was a two-story house with gyprock ceilings under. They were of course restricting visibility from under the floorboards.
Floor Restored and Completed
This old Hoop Pine floor restoration was now finally complete. As a result, we turned this floor on its head and created a stunning feature of this classic Queenslander. Not only are the new boards blended in beautifully with the old, but the surface finish is pristine.
This is especially evident in the light reflection across the surface in the image above. The clients chose the silky-matt (low sheen) finish rather than the traditional high-gloss. Hoop Pine floor look great in either finish regardless.

Karl is a gentleman. He coated our floors and they look amazing! I am so thankful we chose the matt finish (as recommended) as it looks great. Two years on, the floors are standing well up the abuse of two kids under 4. Karl was even kind enough to... come back 2 years later and coat a small section when we removed a kitchen cabinet. I certainly will be using Karl again in the future as we continue to renovate the house!read more
